I stayed in the same school for my 2nd placement. I was a student teacher at Treeview Elementary in the Hayward Unified School District. This school has a diverse student population of 460 students, primarily Hispanic. I was assigned to a 3rd + 4th grade combo classroom.
Students came up with reasons for why owning wild pets can be a lot of trouble. They had to make the distinction between reasons and details. First, they used a graphic organizer to identify three. Then, they translated it onto a letter to a friend of their choice. This way, students learn to think of opinion writing in a more meaningful context.
Students were learning how to identify the main idea of an article and supporting it with key details. They were also learning to summarize. Using an article about lightning, students filled out a graphic organizer on Jamboard. Scaffolding the main idea and details is important when supporting students in generating a summary.
